As you remember from last month, we have been following the incredible story of Ziko. A horse suffering from severe founder and shearing hooves. Ziko went into a severe founder do to some toxicity/Toxemia on April 9th. Due to the severity of rotation on both front feet they performed a DDFT tenotomy on both front legs. Ziko continue to rotate and drop on both front feet. By the end of May Ziko’s right foot suffered near or total destruction of the Inter laminar bond. This is often known as a sinker in which the animals foot has suffered complete destruction of the inter-laminar bonding and the pedal bone is totally loose within the hoof. One of the few options left for Ziko was to do a hoof wall resection and cut the coronary band to relieve pressure in hopes to cease the shearing. The first hoof resection was done on the right on May 18th. After a few weeks of struggling with controlling the forming of necrotic tissue, owner Rebecca decided to try Precision PES-Derm™. Within the first 10 days we saw mass improvement in tissue quality and speed in regrowth. Within that time period the left foot began to shear and slough. The vet did a large resection along the cornet band on July 8th. Precision PES-Derm™ was applied every 2-3 days and wrapped.
The goal was to increase the healing time, stimulate the reproduction of tissue cells, keep infection and proud flesh from forming and stimulate new hoof growth from the cornet band. Below are some pictures of both the left and right foot from day 1 to day 15 and day 30.
Right Foot: Started Precision PES-Derm™ on June 26th.
The Precision team had the opportunity to meet with the vet in charge on the 28th of August. After speaking with him on the results that we are seeing with the Precision PES-Derm™ and was surprised and very pleased on the healing rate and quality of tissue and hoof growth. His estimation of the speed in which a resections would normally heal would be about 4 months (120 days) The resection on the right foot completely healed in 65 days! Almost half the time. If you look at the final pictures below you can see the extent of new hoof growth coming down from the cornet band.
You can also see in the latest picture of the left foot, that it too is almost completely healed on Sept 12th. 10 weeks after the initial resection.
Left Foot Resection July 8th.
