People worry about hydration during the summer but its just as important during the colder months. Horses tend to drink less when they are cold making dehydration a big issue. Horses who don’t drink enough are at risk for colic, choke and other issues. To ensure your horse is still drinking, follow these helpful tips!
Keep his water liquid! Horses will not drink water if it is frozen. Make sure you break up frozen water and if possible keep it a little warmer. Bucket heaters are great as long as they don’t overheat the water.
Also try and keep the water source in easy accessible, dry areas. If his water is surrounded by mud and much, your horse might be less likely to want to walk over there.
If your horse is still struggling to drink enough water, consider feeding an electrolyte. A salt lick is also a good option to encourage drinking.
Hopefully these tips will keep your horse happy, healthy and hydrated all winter. Happy riding!
