Spring time means clinics, trail rides, play days and horse shows. Since most of these happen away form home, its time to dust off the horse trailer and remind your pony how to load. Follow our easy steps below to make sure you, your horse and your rig are all ready to hit the road!
First and foremost, check your rig. This includes the truck and the trailer. On the truck, make sure all fluids are topped off and all tires are properly inflated. make sure you do a break check as well as a hitch inspection to make sure everything is in working order. A road side emergency kit with jumper cables and a spare tire. In this day and age, a cell phone and charger are also essential for hauling.
For your trailer, you also want to check the air pressure in your tires. You also want to check the floor, trailer doors, fasteners and latches, rubber mats, trailer lights, all wiring, trailer chains and trailer brakes.
Second, if it has been a while since you hauled we recommend a test run. If your horse is a tricky loader, you probably don’t want to have a training session the morning of the show. Loading a few times before the show will help take some of the pressure off as well as help your horse realize the trailer is not a big deal.
Third we recommend having a checklist for packing. For a comprehensive packing list from Pro Equine Grooms, click here! In addition to all important items, don’t forget your Precision PES-Derm for your first aid kit! It can be used for cuts, scrapes, scabs as well as fungal conditions like scratches, rain rot and girth itch.
Lastly don’t forget your horses Precision Joint Solution. It is prepackaged in daily doses so it is convenient and perfect for traveling and shows.
